The strengths are: Number one, and most well known for, they deliver endless hot water They’re powerful, high pressure systems The most efficient gas hot water systems Super reliable They are compact and take up very little space They’re most commonly fitted outside And they cater for households with flexible numbers of people The weaknesses are: Not many weaknesses They deliver a limited volume of water, well all systems do, but these are generally less than a conventional hot water cylinder And they can be noisy, if in an outdoor living space A short and generally insignificant list One other consideration though is they use an abundance of gas when they’re in operation and no gas when they’re not. This isn’t a problem, however the issue can be, if you have an existing gas hot water cylinder, and you decide to upgrade to continuous flow type, the gas pipe from the meter to the unit is too small, and it can cost a lot of money to upgrade. Which are the most common brands of Continuous Gas Hot Water Heaters? By far the most popular is the Rinnai, but closely followed by the Rheem. The Rinnai is often referred to as an Infinity, or Rinnai Infinity. This was powerful marketing, and the name has stuck in Kiwis home owners minds. Which is better – Rheem or Rinnai? I’ll give you a completely unbiased answer here. They are just as good as each other. Just get the best deal on the day. We say there are 3 R’s in hot water in Auckland NZ, and they are all awesome… Rheem, Rinnai, and Regency. Rheem and Rinnai are the best products. Indoor and outdoor gas storage hot water cylinders. Both are made by Rheem. Both do exactly the same job, but for the different indoor or outdoor applications. And as you would have guessed the indoor model is flued to outside. They aren’t as efficient, and are big bulky cylinders, so as a result, we never install either of these in new homes anymore, however if you have an existing gas storage hot water cylinder, these 2 replacement models are available and both very good. Not as efficient as the small compact Rheem and Rinnai continuous gas hot water heaters, so not as popular, but often more economical regarding cost when it comes to replacement, especially if you have an indoor model in a multi level home. One other advantage of the gas storage cylinder is the abundance of water that comes out of them. Up to 40 litres per minute… So, if you have multiple showers that get used all at once these still have their place. The disadvantage, you can still run out of hot water, and the running costs are greater. If you have a gas storage cylinder and you want to replace it with a continuous flow gas hot water heater – Is it possible? Absolutely, it will be possible, but it can just be challenged sometimes by cost. For example if it cost you $1500 more initially to get a continuous gas hot water heater fitted, than a gas storage hot water cylinder, then you’d have to make a lot of savings in efficiency to get your money back. On the flip side – if you run out of hot water all the time, it’s a no brainer… So, is there a perfect answer? No, there are multiple solutions that can be best, depending on the circumstances, however 99% of the time… The answer is… Get a continuous gas hot water system, you’ll love it!

Hot Water Cylinder Price Review and Guide, especially if you are in the market for a replacement hot water cylinder. HOT WATER CYLINDER PRICE / PRICES Many people ask me, “is that a good price for a new hot water cylinder”? A great question but not always so easy to quantify. There is a vast difference between what you will get from one installer to the next. There is an extensive range of different hot water cylinder brands available now in NZ which all contribute to very different prices for what may appear to be the same thing to the average person. Take a box of WheatBix It will no matter whether you buy from Countdown, New World, Pak n Save, or the local Petrol station. you will get exactly the same product, but at possibly very different prices. This can happen with hot water cylinder prices as well, however you will find it even much harder to compare as you will not be getting the same thing at each store. When you shop for a certain product, like a 600ml bottle of coke, yes you can easy decide who has the best offer. But take a car – you can buy a brand new car which in a quick look appears the same, however if you really break it down line item by line item you could end up with something very different to the next guy. Sometimes you will get 2 cars for sale on trade me that seem the same but the price is $10,000 different. If you look closely at engine size, year, sound system, upholstery, extras, you will quickly see it isn’t always ‘apples for apples’. SO, IS YOUR HOT WATER CYLINDER PRICE GOOD? You’ve had a quote, or you’re getting quotes. Maybe you have had 2 very different quotes. Maybe the hot water cylinder price you have in your mind is still different to the quotes. My tip to you would be – be very sure about why they are different. Also bare in mind that the quality of the job will range dramatically. I see some great installations, and I see some really poor installations when I’m out and about looking at plumbing jobs. Choose a good plumbing business. Choose someone who is an expert at installing hot water systems. Get a hot water cylinder installer who understands the difference between the different models so you can be sure to get whats right for you. Sometimes you may think you have a great deal, until you get the extras bill. Sadly at that point its too late, as in their fine print they will have noted all the possible exclusions. HOT WATER CYLINDER PRICE – IS PRICE EVERYTHING? My suggestion to you is that you focus on the best new hot water system for you and your family if you have one. What will provide enough hot water, but still be efficient. Consider, will it meet your needs, but not be over the top. What will work for you?. Focus on price and you will potentially end up with something that ticks very few boxes apart from cheap price. It is not even compliant. Probably not really even safe. I don’t know who installed it. But this highlights that it isn’t as simple as buying WheatBix. Start by choosing a professional licensed plumber from a reputable company like Regency Plumbing. Atleast that way you get a proper installation that is safe, works great, has a warranty, and will last. This should actually look like the other cylinder installation further up the page. This is the result of 2 different operators offering the same job really but to very different standards. RHEEM WATER HEATER – A NZ FAVOURITE! For many years people have been installing the Rheem water heater. Rheem water heaters and hot water cylinders are very common through out Auckland. Every day we change a number of Rheem hot water systems, pulling out old Rheem hot water cylinders that have sometimes been installed since the 60’s. The quality of the Rheem water heater is phenomenal. Of course all the old ones we pull out are just low pressure and basic, but it is still a testament to the quality. WHAT RHEEM WATER HEATER IS MOST COMMONLY INSTALLED NOW Of course with the demands and need for high pressure times have change. Not only people want high pressure but also endless hot water. Not everyone is fussed about having a gas Rheem hot water heater, and some people still prefer electric. For some people gas gives them funny feelings. Hey’ that’s all good. No problem, there is heaps of options in gas hot water heaters, and electric. The most common by far is the Rheem Integrity. This is the continuous flow gas hot water heater. Never ending hot water, high pressure, and pretty sleek. They just fit on the outside wall so you also gain a precious cupboard back. THE BENEFITS OF A RHEEM INTEGRITY – RHEEM WATER HEATER Endless hot water High pressure Strong hot showers Very efficient Available for LPG and Natural Gas Free up space in your home We find almost 80% of the time now that we fit the Rheem Integrity – Rheem water heater. Why, they tick the most boxes most of the time. Take a middle aged couple. All the kids have left home, and there is now just 2 people living in a huge home in Auckland. Do they need a 300 litre electric cylinder. Of course not, they are at work most of the time, travel a lot, and mostly the hot water is wasted. Possibly one of them even shower at the gym. However come Waitangi weekend, 2 kids come home with their partners, one has 3 kids. There is now 9 people for a shower over the weekend. Maybe they need 500 litres. Well the Rheem Integrity will heat 500 litres if that’s what is required. No need to wait for a cold electric cylinder. Just pile in one after the other, no problem. Come the following week. The kids and grand kids all vacate, and you’re just heating enough water for ma and pa again. Perfect solution for almost every big old house in Auckland that has just a couple living in it most of the time. THE SECOND MOST POPULAR RHEEM WATER HEATER The 180 litre mains pressure hot water cylinder is still very poular. Why, because they are the most cost effective way of getting mains pressure hot water in almost every case. For many money upfront can be tough. The downside is you will still sometimes run out of hot water. In saying that, for most this Rheem water heater will do exactly what you want it to. And probably 95% of the time. We still install a lot of these in homes that already have one and we are just replacing it. Also for people with a low pressure cylinder that just wish to upgrade to electric mains pressure. They will choose one of these to save money, or possibly because gas scares them. OTHER RHEEM WATER HEATERS LOW PRESSURE RHEEM WATER HEATER OR LOW PRESSURE HOT WATER CYLINDER Day after day we are called to replace leaking hot water cylinders. Many will be Rheem 135 litre low pressure hot water cylinders. These are fitted in a stack of rental properties across Auckland. They are also fitted in a good number of older homes where old people still occupy them. Most young people remove them and upgrade to mains pressure. Are they still good? Well, they heat hot water, and you can get wet in the shower, but that’s all. Most landlords will refit them as they are cheap. They actually work OK if you use an old style Felton shower set. So, yes they work, but depends what you want in a shower, and if you want pressure in the kitchen.
