Is it really worthwhile having a hot water tap instead of just using a kettle? On one of our recent kitchen renovation projects we had a client querying the value of installing a hot water tap – what exactly are they, how do they work, and why would you have one? It was only once we started talking about all of the benefits that we realised what a popular topic this is and how often we get asked about installing hot water taps. Our summary of why you need an instant water tap, then, is presented here. We should also note that while we refer to them as hot water taps – because most people use them to get instant hot water – some models also provide both cold water and cold sparkling water. Instant Hot Water Tap Hot water taps deliver filtered boiling water instantly and safely at the touch of a button from the tap. There’s no more need to wait for the kettle to boil if you’re wanting a cup of coffee or tea. You just simply press the hot side of the tap or pull the hot level (depending on which model you have), and hot water comes through the tap just like a regular tap – except it is boiling hot and there’s no waiting for it to heat up. Whether you have a sink or not, we install a tank of approximately 2.5 to 5 litres below the benchtop. The size you choose will depend on your use and space. The heating element in the tank brings the water in it up to a temperature of approximately 98°C, perfect for the ideal cup of tea or coffee. But don’t worry about wasting resources – most models come with timers or sleep settings so you can set the time you want the water heated. This is a great function for when you know you’re going to be away from home or the office for a period of time. Why do you need Instant Hot Water Tap? Convenience and time saving Instant Hot water taps are great for having instant hot water. There’s no more wondering if there’s enough water in the jug, and no more waiting around for it to boil – extremely handy both in the home and in an office setting. Money saving Most people put more water in the kettle to boil than they actually need. Therefore, they’re using electricity to heat more water than is needed, and of course, it takes longer to heat a litre of water (for example) than just a single cup. (In case you’re interested, it takes about four to five minutes to boil a litre of water in a kettle, and about two minutes to bring a cup to the boil in the kettle.) Instant filtered water Instant Hot water taps also have an inbuilt filter, so you know the water you’re drinking will be filtered and fresh tasting. Several options Some models produce both instant hot and cold filtered water, as well as having a sparkling water option. Space saving Hot water taps can be installed on benches or countertops even where there is no sink. Great for cooking Instant hot water is great for more than just hot drinks. Meal preparation is faster when you need hot water for boiling pasta, making rice, steaming vegetables, etc. Kitchen clean-up is also easier if you need boiling water for soaking dirty dishes or getting rid of hard-to-remove or stuck-on food from pots and pans. Ideal for a workplace or office Having an instant hot water tap is a great idea for office kitchens where you have several people making hot drinks or preparing lunches at different times. Think about the time saved – there are approximately 260 workdays per year. Let’s assume it takes about two minutes for the kettle to boil. If you have 10 employees who each have two hot drinks a day, that adds up to 10,400 minutes, or 173 hours, or 21 working days per year when staff are probably standing in the kitchen talking, reading the paper, checking their phones, while the kettle boils! Things to look out for Not all brands are created equal, and there are definitely better hot water taps than others. The things to look for include the space the tank takes up under the bench, the temperature the water is heated to, the flexibility to adjust that temperature setting, whether the unit has a timer or “sleep” setting, and whether the system has a filter. You might also want to look into whether the tap also delivers instant chilled water, or instant cold sparkling water. Most reputable brands have kept up with consumer expectations in these areas, but it is always worth checking. The most important thing to be concerned about is safety. There are two things to consider here. First, do the sides of the unit or the tap itself get too hot to touch (or is it well insulated)? Second, what kind of safety switch or mechanism does the unit have? As boiling water can cause serious burns – especially with children or elderly people with thinner skin – it’s absolutely essential that you use a hot water tap that has specific safety features that prevent use by children. These safety features might include a childproof double push and turn switch, a push and twist operation, or a child lock or clip. Hot Water Tap Brands that we love At Regency Plumbing we know and trust both the InSinkErator hot water tap range and the Rheem range of hot water taps for kitchens. We can install a hot water tap in a new build, a kitchen renovation, or and office fit-out – or we can retro-fit it to your existing space. Have a look at our current specials here or get in touch with us to discuss what is best for your home or workplace.
Why do you run out of hot water? What can go wrong with your water heater? When should you repair or replace your hot water heater? How can you avoid running out of hot water? We have no hot water – what’s wrong? The first sign of trouble with your water heater is usually a lack of hot water. If you turn on your hot water tap and, even after letting it run for a short while, you have no hot water, chances are there’s an issue with your water heater system. Other signs of a fault with your hot water heating are a short supply of hot water – you have hot water when you turn the tap on, but you’re running out of hot water faster than usual. Alternatively, you might still have hot water, but you may notice strange noises – hissing or banging – coming from your hot water system or cylinder. Lastly, you might notice water leaking from your hot water cylinder (more than the usual small amount of water that gets released from the cylinder). These are all signs that something’s not quite right with your water heating system. There are a few reasons why your hot water heater might fail. But first we need to know what type of hot water system you have. The three most common methods of heating water for your household are: Hot water cylinder – gas Hot water cylinder – electric Continuous flow hot water – gas What causes a hot water system to fail and what should you do? If you have an electric hot water cylinder, the first and easiest thing to check is whether or not there has been a power outage at your home. It might sound obvious, but often people turn the shower on first thing to let it warm up, before even turning on the bathroom light. So turn on the light to check whether there is a problem with your power. If there’s no power outage, then give the team at Regency Plumbing a call on 800 758 623. We’ll run through a few questions with you and see if we can help over the phone. If not, our 24/7 emergency team can help get your hot water back up and running. If you have a gas hot water cylinder or a continuous flow hot water heating system that isn’t working, there could be a number reasons causing it to fail. Similar to problems with an electric system, the first thing to check is whether there is a power source failure. This is rare with gas, but it’s worth checking. If you’re using LPG bottles, check whether you’ve run out of gas. If there is no problem with the gas supply, there may be faults with the thermostat, valves, or other components of your hot water cylinder. In fact, when a gas hot water cylinder system fails, it’s usually the components that fail, not the cylinder itself. If this is the case, you’ll need to give us a call. You should only trust a qualified gas fitter to look at your gas hot water heating system. Please do not attempt to fix it yourself, as this could be extremely dangerous (and it’s not actually legal to do your own repairs on a gas system). How long should my hot water system last? Most hot water cylinders – whether they’re gas or electric – come with a manufacturer’s 10-year guarantee. They should, however, last for about 15 years. So as a general rule of thumb, if your hot water cylinder is over 15 years old and it fails, it’s probably time to replace it. A continuous flow system should also last approximately 10 to 15 years. These also come with a manufacturer’s guarantee of about 10 years, depending on the brand. We supply both Rinnai and Rheem, and trust them both to provide long-lasting service. The team at Regency Plumbing are experienced in maintaining, repairing and installing hot water cylinders, so give us a call for some options. Whenever possible we’ll look to repair your system before replacing it – but if you’re interested in upgrading to a continuous flow system, we’d be more than happy to help. How can we make sure we never run out of hot water? As they say, never say never. But there are definitely things you can do to minimise the chances of running out of hot water. The most important thing you can do is to have regular maintenance done on your water heating system. Many of us take our hot water for granted. We have a water heating system and we don’t think about it – until something goes wrong. At Regency Plumbing we urge you to make the time to have us come and look at your water heating system when there’s nothing wrong. This will greatly reduce the likelihood of us having to come out for an urgent or emergency call when something goes wrong. You can book a time here and our friendly team will come out and make sure everything is running as it should. A regular maintenance check includes: checking for rust or corrosion checking for faulting parts checking for leaks (water leaks or gas leaks) checking all valves, components, thermostat listening for unusual sounds checking how long it takes for your water to heat up There are many issues that go unseen to the trained eye (and ears). The team at Regency Plumbing has been working with hot water heating systems for over two decades. We can instantly spot any issues before they become costly repairs (and before they lead to expensive water damage to your property). Is it better to repair or replace our hot water system? This depends on what problem there are with your hot water heater system and how old it is. Generally, if you have a water heating system that is close to 15 years old, replacing will be more cost-effective. We […]
Why would you choose an EcoPlus Heat Pump Hot Water System? Well it just makes sense. If you can save up to 80%* of your electric storage hot water energy costs, year after year! why wouldn’t you make the switch. When you consider how much cost relates to the average household’s energy costs from your conventional hot water cylinder, taking control of the situation, and finding the most efficient hot water system on the market, has got to be a great starting point. Energy Savings with the EcoPlus Hot Water Heat Pump System The savings are proving to be rock solid, and are not to be scoffed at.The EcoPlus Hot Water Heat Pump System uses industry-leading technology, where energy is drawn in from the ambient atmosphere and transferred into heat. An Ozone friendly refrigerant R744 (CO2) absorbs the heat, which then flows into a compressor where it’s converted into a high-temperature gas. Then, it passes through a condenser within the water tank and the water is heated up. The most amazing thing is no backup element booster is required, and it still heats plenty of hot water. This is a radical improvement on some of the earlier hot water heat pump systems. Based on recent testing it was found that the EcoPlus Hot Water Heat Pump System could save you a significant amount of money on your heating costs compared to the conventional electric storage hot water cylinder. In fact, this system will save you up to 80%* of your hot water energy costs, year after year. And the beauty is, that in all the testing I have been privy to, no one has ended up with cold showers. This is really impressive as the earlier models made by other manufacturers also saved money, but struggled to deliver enough hot water for many NZ families. The EcoPlus Hot Water Heat Pump System technology uses 0.84kW^^ of energy to generate 4.99kW of heat; this is 80 per cent less energy compared to traditional hot water systems. When considering that electricity price hikes will continue to hit households year after year, it becomes the best, financially sustainable option on the market. We have now just fitted our second EcoPlus Hot Water Heat Pump System in NZ for customers and the results are brilliant. There are a few design criteria’s that must be met, specific to the EcoPlus Hot Water Heat Pump System. The heat pump and the separate storage tank or hot water cylinder can be located up to 15 metres apart horizontally or 3 metres vertically, but no further. The 2 units we have just installed were both installed side by side, and i’m sure most will end up that way, especially for retrofit installations, however they can be installed apart. The Rheem stainless steel storage tanks are fully insulated for minimal heat loss, are built to mains pressure requirements, and are designed to go inside or outside, giving plenty of flexibility. The Sanden heat pump itself must go outside. Compared with a conventional electric system, Sanden’s heat pump features up to 50 per cent faster heat recovery. In ambient air of 20 degrees it takes just 4 hours to heat 315 litres of water from 17 degrees (C) to 63 degrees (C). An in-built freeze protection makes the hot water heat pump system suitable for all of NZ’s climates throughout the entire year. We are well impressed so far with the EcoPlus Hot Water Heat Pump System. After experiencing one of the early models made by a different group that was installed in my family home in Karaka, it was certainly far from what anyone would consider to be a great option. It was noisy and couldn’t deliver enough hot water, the recovery was simply too slow, and then when we fitted the after market booster element it destroyed the efficiency savings. So to be able to finally install heat pump hot water systems we can stand behind and be confident in is great from an installers point of view. EcoPlus Hot Water Heat Pump System – Whisper Quiet Operation The heat pump unit features a whisper quiet operation(37dB), making it neighbourhood friendly as well. This is a big advancement in heat pump hot water systems. So there you have it, in a time of escalating energy costs, the most energy efficient and quietest hot water heat pump system, that is also environmentally sound, is a brilliant choice for any family home. Look out for our amazing offers on upgrading your old energy gobbling hot water cylinder to the latest and greatest EcoPlus Hot Water Heat Pump System. The team at Regency Plumbing are right behind this product. We have been chosen by Rheem NZ as a recommended installer of the Ecoplus and currently are the exclusive installer for much of the North Island.
RHEEM WATER HEATER – A NZ FAVOURITE! For many years people have been installing the Rheem water heater. Rheem water heaters and hot water cylinders are very common through out Auckland. Every day we change a number of Rheem hot water systems, pulling out old Rheem hot water cylinders that have sometimes been installed since the 60’s. The quality of the Rheem water heater is phenomenal. Of course all the old ones we pull out are just low pressure and basic, but it is still a testament to the quality. WHAT RHEEM WATER HEATER IS MOST COMMONLY INSTALLED NOW Of course with the demands and need for high pressure times have change. Not only people want high pressure but also endless hot water. Not everyone is fussed about having a gas Rheem hot water heater, and some people still prefer electric. For some people gas gives them funny feelings. Hey’ that’s all good. No problem, there is heaps of options in gas hot water heaters, and electric. The most common by far is the Rheem Integrity. This is the continuous flow gas hot water heater. Never ending hot water, high pressure, and pretty sleek. They just fit on the outside wall so you also gain a precious cupboard back. THE BENEFITS OF A RHEEM INTEGRITY – RHEEM WATER HEATER Endless hot water High pressure Strong hot showers Very efficient Available for LPG and Natural Gas Free up space in your home We find almost 80% of the time now that we fit the Rheem Integrity – Rheem water heater. Why, they tick the most boxes most of the time. Take a middle aged couple. All the kids have left home, and there is now just 2 people living in a huge home in Auckland. Do they need a 300 litre electric cylinder. Of course not, they are at work most of the time, travel a lot, and mostly the hot water is wasted. Possibly one of them even shower at the gym. However come Waitangi weekend, 2 kids come home with their partners, one has 3 kids. There is now 9 people for a shower over the weekend. Maybe they need 500 litres. Well the Rheem Integrity will heat 500 litres if that’s what is required. No need to wait for a cold electric cylinder. Just pile in one after the other, no problem. Come the following week. The kids and grand kids all vacate, and you’re just heating enough water for ma and pa again. Perfect solution for almost every big old house in Auckland that has just a couple living in it most of the time. THE SECOND MOST POPULAR RHEEM WATER HEATER The 180 litre mains pressure hot water cylinder is still very poular. Why, because they are the most cost effective way of getting mains pressure hot water in almost every case. For many money upfront can be tough. The downside is you will still sometimes run out of hot water. In saying that, for most this Rheem water heater will do exactly what you want it to. And probably 95% of the time. We still install a lot of these in homes that already have one and we are just replacing it. Also for people with a low pressure cylinder that just wish to upgrade to electric mains pressure. They will choose one of these to save money, or possibly because gas scares them. OTHER RHEEM WATER HEATERS LOW PRESSURE RHEEM WATER HEATER OR LOW PRESSURE HOT WATER CYLINDER Day after day we are called to replace leaking hot water cylinders. Many will be Rheem 135 litre low pressure hot water cylinders. These are fitted in a stack of rental properties across Auckland. They are also fitted in a good number of older homes where old people still occupy them. Most young people remove them and upgrade to mains pressure. Are they still good? Well, they heat hot water, and you can get wet in the shower, but that’s all. Most landlords will refit them as they are cheap. They actually work OK if you use an old style Felton shower set. So, yes they work, but depends what you want in a shower, and if you want pressure in the kitchen. If you just want a cheap replacement hot water cylinder, you can get one here… [CLICK HERE] GAS STORAGE RHEEM WATER HEATER These were never installed in mass or super popular, however there’s a few out there, and they do get replaced from time to time. As always, they will not last for ever either. Some areas of Auckland have more than others, but if you do have them, there is 2 basic options for gas storage hot water cylinders. Rheem Stellar – Rheem Water Heater – Replaces the old Vulcan Freeloader Or, if you have a Rheem indoor gas storage cylinder, as the one pictured below, you can replace it with the new model of the same thing. Gas Rheem water heater for indoor use So, if you are looking at replacing your existing Rheem water heater, or upgrading to something better, we can certainly help.
